It's always a good day for an IPA.
So say the many connoisseurs of the hoppy beverage. Not only is (North) American IPA the most popular style of craft beer, it is also the biggest driver of growth in the craft beer market. Whether it's the amber drink's distinctive flavour, evident bitterness, or the "advanced" nature of appreciation, it's clear that IPAs are here to stay.
Despite the recent booming popularity of IPAs, the style of beer has actually been around since the 1700s.
British troops in India quickly realized that they weren't going to find good beer locally. Hot weather and the lack of refrigeration made the fermentation process nearly impossible, so they had beer shipped in from the homeland. The problem was the English porters and ales would often go bad due to long transit times.
So brewers decided to increase the amount of beer preservatives, hops and alcohol, to see if that would help it withstand the long journey. It worked! And the new IPA was born.
IPA aficionados visiting Niagara are in luck – the area boasts some outstanding IPA brewery selections. A few of our favourites are listed below:
Named after the historic waterfall of Ball's Falls in lush Twenty Valley, the Ball’s Falls Session IPA pours with a pale golden colour and heavy foam. Aromas of peach, citrus, and grains delight the senses with a gentle bitterness before leading to a balanced, dry finish. A 4.5% ABV makes this a lighter, refreshing IPA perfect for pairing with a slightly spicy Mexican or Indian curry meal.
The Bench Brewing Company is home to the Ball’s Falls Session IPA, and is a great place to unwind. With eight beautiful acres, a lively tap and tasting room, an outdoor beer garden, a barrel aging facility, and their very own hops field, there is plenty to explore and experience while sampling the wide variety of craft beer.
The aggressive Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe hops of the Silversmith Limited Release Mind's IPA give this American-style IPA tangy tangerine and grapefruit flavours that finish with soft passionfruit and pine. A robust 6.5% ABV makes this the perfect IPA to tantalize and savour.
The Silversmith Brewing Company is an independently owned craft brewery that has been creating award-winning beer since 2011. The brewery and beer hall are housed inside a rustic 1890s church complete with brick walls and exposed beams. Also offering great food, the craft brewery is the ideal spot to while away the afternoon.
The Exchange Brewery White IPA is a strong contender within the recently developed style combining Belgian Witbier and American IPA flavours. Big fruity Chinook, Cascade, Mosaic, and Citra hops blend with classic wit coriander and orange peel spices – fermented on house Belgian yeast. This medium-bodied IPA pours as a cloudy white amber with creamy head, finishing with bracing bitterness. A 6.4% ABV rounds out the offering for a creative addition to the IPA line-up.
The new Exchange Brewery and tasting room offers two 8-tap bars in a bright, clean space. Bottles and growlers are available for purchase, and an intimate space is available for gatherings. Located in Niagara-on-the-Lake's Old Town heritage district, it is a wonderful spot to sample IPA’s part of the growing local craft brewing industry.
